  • The tragic incident was said to have been caused by impatience and rush to enter venue of the event, resulting in a stampede.

A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday at a children’s carnival in Ibadan, Oyo State, resulting in the loss of several young lives.

The stampede, which happened at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, was caused by an overwhelming crowd that attended the event.

Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde, confirmed the arrest of the carnival organizers in a statement issued on Wednesday.

“While investigations are ongoing, the primary organisers of the event that led to this stampede have been taken into custody,” Makinde said.

The Governor described the incident as “a very sad day for us here in Oyo State,” sympathising with the parents “whose joy has suddenly been turned to mourning due to these deaths.

“To prevent further tragedies, security personnel have been deployed to restore order at the venue,” the Governor said.

Medical teams and ambulances were also dispatched to the scene, and the event was halted with attendees escorted out.

“We are taking all necessary measures to secure the venue,” Makinde added.

He reassured the public that those responsible for the disaster would face consequences.

“Please remain calm as the security agencies investigate this unfortunate incident,” Makinde said.
