  • Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has canceled his December 25 birthday celebration to honor the 35 children who died in Ibadan
  • The tragic stampede occurred during a children’s funfair, prompting condolences from political leaders and a moment of silence for victims

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has cancelled his birthday celebration, scheduled for December 25, 2024, in honour of the children who tragically lost their lives in a stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, resulting in the death of 40 children and leaving many others injured.

Governor Makinde announced while receiving condolences from the South-East leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at his office.

The delegation, led by former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, visited to sympathize with the governor and the people of Oyo State over the tragedy.

Describing the period as “a moment of sobering,” Makinde expressed deep regret, stating that the tragic event was avoidable. He thanked the delegation for their support, noting that it strengthened the grieving state.

The police have detained Queen Naomi Silekunola and eight others to investigate the stampede’s circumstances.

During the condolence visit, Wabara, on behalf of the PDP South-East zone, described the incident as deeply unfortunate, especially during the festive season.

He urged the affected families to find solace in God and prayed for strength to bear the losses.

The delegation observed a minute of silence in memory of the deceased.

The PDP South-East zone had announced a birthday celebration for Governor Makinde in Ebonyi State, which was subsequently cancelled in light of the tragedy. Delegates included former Ebonyi State Governor Senator Sam Egwu and other party leaders.

A former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, joined Governor Makinde in welcoming the guests, as they all shared in the community’s grief.
