  • Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde outlined measures taken to support victims of the January explosion in Bodija, Ibadan, emphasizing transparency
  • The governor announced financial assistance and road repairs for affected areas, while ensuring justice through ongoing investigations by security agencies

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has outlined measures his administration has taken to address the January explosion in Bodija, Ibadan.

He shared the updates during the GSM Media Chat on Saturday, reaffirming his commitment to transparency and victim support.

The explosion, which occurred on Aderinola Street, Adeyi Avenue in Old Bodija, claimed five lives, left 77 injured, and damaged 55 houses.

A comprehensive report on the incident, prepared by Medical, Security, and Engineering teams, was submitted to the governor in February. Governor Makinde revealed that the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) assessed the damages and estimated losses at over ₦3 billion.

“The government decided to provide financial support to the victims,” Makinde stated. However, he noted that some individuals later demanded ₦5 billion, alleging the government had received funds for the incident.

“I told them they were part of the report, and they don’t manage the government with us,” he said.

A meeting with stakeholders has been scheduled for Monday to address these issues.

Beyond financial assistance, the governor announced the approval of road repairs in the affected area. “When the Bodija incident occurred, we took immediate steps,” Makinde said, emphasizing his administration’s dedication to restoring normalcy.

“For those whose properties were destroyed, our focus is on support, not compensation,” he added.

Makinde also assured the public that security agencies are handling the case to ensure justice is served. “Justice may take time, but we will achieve it,” he concluded.
