The Lagos State Government has directed event organisers, particularly those planning to distribute food items as palliatives, to obtain clearance from the state before proceeding.

The measure is aimed at ensuring public safety during the festive season and beyond.

This announcement was made during a joint press conference held on Sunday by the Ministries of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, and Information and Strategy in Alausa-Ikeja.

Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, highlighted recent incidents of stampedes in other parts of the country during palliative distribution and a stage collapse at a Victoria Island beach event, stressing the need for tighter controls.

“We are here on behalf of the governor to tell Lagosians that he (the governor) feels concerned about the report of stampedes in some parts of the country and will not want such happening here in Lagos,” Omotoso said. “To prevent such occurrences, all individuals or groups intending to hold events or distribute items to large crowds must seek clearance from the Lagos Safety Commission.”

Omotoso emphasised the importance of crowd control measures and stated that the Safety Commission is working with security agencies to support event organisers in ensuring safe operations.

“Any act of charity should not turn tragic,” he warned. “Those who bypass these guidelines will have themselves to blame if incidents occur.”

The Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Gbenga Oyerinde, urged residents to remain vigilant and report emergencies through designated hotlines.

Lanre Mojola, Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, noted the state’s commitment to safety, citing its efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. He called on event planners to adhere to safety regulations, particularly for gatherings exceeding 250 people.

“Rushing, negligence, complacency, and frustration during distribution of food items can lead to tragic outcomes. Event organisers must prioritise safety at all times,” Mojola said.

The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe and enjoyable festive season for all residents.
