The Ogun State Government has declared the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport as the most advanced in Nigeria and the West African sub-region, featuring the longest runway in the area.

During a meeting with the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC) at the facility, Ade Akinsanya, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, revealed that the airport’s 4 km-long and 60 m-wide runway can accommodate wide-bodied aircraft, such as Boeing 777s and Airbus A350s. The facility is 95–98% complete and includes a master plan for future developments like hotels, amusement parks, and cinemas.

“This airport was designed for international flights and large aircraft. Once we receive NCAA approval for commercial operations, we will begin immediately,” Akinsanya said, adding that the facility currently has approval for chartered flights.

The airport spans 5,000 hectares, with the first phase covering 900 hectares. Equipped with three fire tenders, the airport is upgrading its classification to level seven to enhance safety standards.

Airport Manager Dapo Olumide noted that the facility aims to achieve the ENCAS 2023 permit, surpassing standard aerodrome certification. Transportation Commissioner Gbenga Dairo highlighted the airport’s strategic location within a special agricultural processing zone, calling it a legacy project of Governor Dapo Abiodun.

With final touches underway, the airport is poised to revolutionise aviation and cargo services in Nigeria and beyond.
