Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya has signed the Disability Protection Bill into law, marking a significant milestone for persons living with disabilities (PWDs) in the state.

The new law establishes a Disability Commission to address the needs and aspirations of PWDs. The governor has appointed Dr Ishaku Adamu, a senior lecturer in Political Science at Gombe State University, as the commission’s Executive Secretary.

Governor Yahaya, speaking at the signing ceremony, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the lives of PWDs. He revealed plans to renovate the state’s only special school and construct two additional ones in each senatorial district.

“The establishment of the Disability Commission will serve as a platform to address the needs and aspirations of our brothers and sisters living with disabilities,” Yahaya said.

The governor also acknowledged the role of advocacy groups and stakeholders in pushing for the bill, commending the Gombe State House of Assembly for its dedication in ensuring its passage.

The state’s Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Adamu, expressed gratitude, noting that the bill had faced rejection 15 years ago.

“This commission will promote education, healthcare, and the well-being of persons with disabilities. Today, we witness a historic moment,” he said.

Speaker of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Abubakar Luggerewo, stated that the bill had been thoroughly reviewed to ensure it met the expectations of the PWD community.

The law is seen as a landmark step toward improving inclusivity and accessibility for PWDs in Gombe State.
