  • Hundreds of Ibadan residents protested for the release of Oriyomi Hamzat, Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, and Abdullah Fasasi, detained after a tragic stampede
  • The December 18 stampede during a Christmas funfair resulted in over 35 deaths, prompting public outcry and demands for justice

Hundreds of Ibadan residents have staged a peaceful protest demanding the release of Oriyomi Hamzat, CEO of Agidigbo FM, Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, and Mr. Abdullah Fasasi.

The trio is currently held at Agodi Custodial Centre in Ibadan.

The protesters marched from various parts of the city to key locations, including the NTA Agodi Ibadan and Olubadan Palace, to show solidarity with Hamzat and the others in detention.

The protests follow a tragic stampede on December 18, during a disorganised Christmas funfair, which claimed the lives of over 35 children.

The Iyaganku Chief Magistrate’s Court had ordered the remand of Hamzat, Prophetess Naomi, and the principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, in connection with the incident.

Speaking at NTA, Apostle Peluola Akintayo, a devoted fan of Hamzat, pleaded for their release. In tears, he said, “I appeal to the federal and state governments to release Oriyomi Hamzat and the others. He has always supported the poor. Please, show mercy.”

Mrs. Kareem Toyin, an elderly protester and market woman from Afijio Local Government Area, also voiced her concerns.

“This man is our helper. He always supports those in need. We are heartbroken by the tragedy, but we beg for mercy.

Hamzat has helped us financially; we need him back. The principal and Princess Naomi should also be released,” she said.
