The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State received a major boost as over 3,000 members of various political parties defected to the party during an empowerment programme in Ukwa East Local Government Area.
The event, organised by Hon. Chris Nkwonta, who represents Ukwa East and Ukwa West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, was marked by APC’s signature broom symbol, symbolising the party’s growing influence.
In a statement by Levinus Nwabughiogu, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu attributed the defections to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to the development of the Igbo people. Kalu praised the establishment of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), calling it a pivotal step in addressing the region’s infrastructure needs.
“The President has tried for Ndigbo and continues to do so. He has shown equity and fairness, ensuring that the damage caused by the civil war is being addressed,” Kalu said.
Welcoming the defectors, Kalu commended their decision, stating: “For joining the APC, it shall be well with you. The parties you left have collapsed. APC is the party for the future, and we will empower you to empower others.”
The event also highlighted Hon. Chris Nkwonta’s recent defection to the APC from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Nkwonta, who chairs the House Committee on the South East Development Commission, was praised for promoting the APC’s agenda in the region.
Notable attendees included Hon. Emeka Stanley, a former Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly and former member of the House of Representatives.
Kalu assured the people of Ukwa East, Ukwa West, and the entire Igbo land of further dividends of democracy under President Tinubu’s administration, urging them to continue supporting the APC.
