Kaduna-based activist and political commentator Mahdi Shehu has been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) over a controversial viral video.
The video, which has since been deleted, allegedly contained outdated footage suggesting plans by the Nigerian government to establish a French military base in the North-West. Despite its removal, the footage had already gained significant attention online, sparking national security concerns.
Sources reveal that Shehu is currently in DSS custody in Kaduna and may face court proceedings soon. Security analyst Zagazola Makama reported that authorities have issued directives for his arraignment while ensuring his rights are upheld during detention.
Shehu’s lawyer, Mustapha Abubakar, confirmed learning about the arrest through the activist’s family but could not provide further details as he is not in Kaduna. The DSS has not yet released an official statement.
This is not Shehu’s first run-in with authorities. In February, he was arrested and detained by police in Abuja following a petition filed by former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami.
A source close to Shehu revealed the petition, submitted through Malami’s law office, accused the whistleblower of targeting the former minister and his family. The arrest was carried out by the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit.
Shehu’s lawyer previously suggested that the February arrest was part of a broader attempt to silence his client for demanding accountability from members of Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
