Ogun State Assumes Control of Electricity Market Regulation

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has transferred regulatory oversight of Ogun State’s electricity market to the newly established Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission (OSERC).

This move, announced on NERC’s official X account on Monday, follows the recent transfer of similar authority to Lagos State under the amended Constitution and the Electricity Act 2023.

The Electricity Act empowers states to regulate intrastate electricity markets, provided they formally notify NERC and meet stipulated conditions. Ogun State has reportedly fulfilled these requirements.

A statement from NERC confirmed:
“In compliance with the amended Constitution and the Electricity Act 2023, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has issued an order transferring regulatory oversight of Ogun State’s electricity market to OSERC. This aligns with the decentralisation of regulatory powers to promote efficient energy management at the state level.”

The order also retains NERC’s role as the central regulator for inter-state and international electricity operations. The commission directed that all processes for the handover must be finalised by 4 June 2025.

This transition highlights a broader shift towards state-led management in Nigeria’s electricity sector, enabling local authorities to better cater to their specific energy needs.
