  • The PDP condemned the alleged assassination attempt on Senator Lawal Usman, calling it a troubling sign for security in 2025
  • The Kaduna State Police launched an investigation into the incident, although they had not received a formal complaint from Senator Usman

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State has expressed deep concern over the attempted assassination of Senator Lawal Adamu Usman, representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, describing the incident as a troubling sign for the year 2025.

Senator Usman disclosed the alleged assassination attempt on January 1, 2025, through a Facebook post.

In response, the Kaduna State Police Command announced that it had launched an investigation, although it noted that it had not received a formal complaint from the senator.

In a statement released on Friday, Maria Dogo, the PDP’s Publicity Secretary in Kaduna, strongly condemned the incident and demanded immediate action, including a thorough investigation, the arrest of the perpetrators, and the prosecution of those involved.

“The Kaduna State Government’s inability to prevent killings, maimings, and kidnappings across the state has been alarming,” the statement read.

“The recent assassination attempt on Senator Usman highlights the government’s ineptitude in managing security and sets a worrisome tone for 2025.”

The PDP further urged the government to bolster security measures for elected representatives and their families, emphasizing the need for accountability.

“We emphasize that the PDP will not stand idly by while the lives of our elected representatives are threatened or taken, allegedly by the APC and its members.

The ballot, not violence, is the only accepted means of transferring power,” Dogo stated.

The PDP criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for resorting to violence instead of focusing on meaningful governance.

“Instead of resorting to violence, the APC-led government and its members should focus on implementing meaningful initiatives and programs in the senatorial zone, earning the party goodwill among the people,” the statement added.

The PDP called on its members and residents of Kaduna Central to remain calm while pursuing legal means to ensure justice.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to protecting democracy in Kaduna State and ensuring people’s voices are heard through peaceful and lawful channels.
