The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has cautioned against reckless driving following a devastating tanker explosion in Niger State.
The explosion occurred on Saturday at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, claiming over 60 lives and injuring many.
A statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi revealed that a truck carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control, caught fire, and triggered the explosion.
Egbetokun described the incident as devastating and offered condolences to the government and people of Niger State.
In response to the tragedy, Egbetokun directed State Commissioners of Police to fortify their Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) and collaborate with traffic agencies.
He stressed the importance of enforcing traffic laws to prevent similar tragedies.
“Negligence and disregard for traffic laws are major contributors to such incidents.”
“I am instructing all Commissioners of Police to work closely with traffic agencies to ensure safer roads and strict enforcement of traffic laws.”
Egbetokun urged vehicle owners and drivers to prioritize safety by maintaining roadworthy vehicles and adhering to traffic regulations.
“Road safety is a collective responsibility.”
“Every driver, vehicle owner, and stakeholder must play their part to prevent unnecessary loss of lives and property.”
Egbetokun called on transport operators and the public to act responsibly and prioritize road safety.
He also prayed for the souls of the departed and wished the injured a swift recovery.
