Police in Anambra State have arrested six suspects and recovered arms, ammunition, and other incriminating items during separate “stop and search” operations across the state.
A statement by the command’s spokesman, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, on Sunday said the arrests followed an intensified security operation ordered by Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Itam.
Among the items recovered were a locally made double-barrel gun, a locally made revolver pistol, a metal axe, a Q-Link motorcycle, a gallon of suspected hard drugs, cult-related clothing, three Android phones, and four ATM cards.
One of the operations took place at Anaku/Omor Junction, where police intercepted eight suspects riding on a motorcycle. The suspects fled, but officers pursued and arrested three of them—Okafor Chibike, Ekene Lucky Nwadigbu, and Godwin Osaz—while seizing concealed firearms.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects are members of the Aye Confraternity and were on their way to an initiation ground,” Ikenga said.
In a separate operation at Eke Awgbu Junction on 1 February, three more suspects were arrested in a tricycle. A search uncovered a live 7.62mm round, a black axe, suspected hard drugs, and cult-related items.
The police say the suspects confessed to being members of the Black Axe Confraternity. Their tricycle was also seized.
Ikenga added that all six suspects would be charged in court after investigations were completed.
