The Sokoto State Government has warned parents against resisting polio immunisation, saying non-compliance will not be tolerated in its efforts to eradicate the disease.
Officials have been directed to report parents who hinder vaccination campaigns, Deputy Governor Idris Gobir said at a United Nations meeting in Sokoto on Wednesday.
His remarks followed a report by the state’s Health Commissioner, Dr Faruk Abubakar, who highlighted resistance from some parents and data inaccuracies as key challenges in the fight against polio.
“We have committees at the state, local, and ward levels tackling this resistance. The government has the resources and personnel to eliminate polio, yet its presence remains a serious concern,” Gobir said.
UNICEF’s Country Representative in Nigeria, Christian Munduate, warned that Sokoto North and South have the highest number of polio cases in the country.
She also raised concerns over fake fingerprint markings used to falsely indicate that children had been immunised.
Traditional leaders, government officials, and international partners attended the meeting, pledging greater collaboration to strengthen immunisation efforts.
