- Peter Obi is calling for transparency and accountability regarding the increase of the proposed 2025 budget to N54.2 trillion
- Obi noted that while revenue sources were outlined, there was no corresponding breakdown of expenditures to justify the increase
Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has accused President Bola Tinubu of lacking transparency in the 2025 budget proposal.
Debate has intensified since Tinubu proposed increasing the 2025 budget from N49.7 trillion to N54.2 trillion.
In a tweet, Obi noted that while the sources of revenue were outlined, there was no corresponding breakdown of expenditures to justify the increase.
“For transparency and accountability, Nigerians need to know how the resources generated from them are being allocated to ensure they are judiciously spent on the country’s development and the well-being of the people,” Obi stated.
He stressed that expenditures should prioritize critical sectors like education, healthcare, security, and poverty alleviation.
“Nigerians are still waiting for a detailed account of the execution and expenditures of the Renewed Hope budget passed in December 2023 to ensure proper utilization for the nation’s future development and citizens’ well-being,” he added.
Obi urged the National Assembly to take this opportunity to obtain and disclose the full details of the 2024 Renewed Hope budget.
He emphasized that transparency in this matter is essential for ensuring accountability, learning from past budgets, and making informed decisions for national progress.
