- His statement follows the faction’s rejection of Tuesday’s convention, which saw Major elected as the party’s new chairman
The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Agbo Major, has reaffirmed that former party leader Rabiu Kwankwaso and his faction remain expelled.
His statement follows the faction’s rejection of Tuesday’s convention, which saw Major elected as the party’s new chairman. The Kwankwaso faction has insisted that the event, held in Lagos, was illegitimate and that Dr Ajuji Ahmed remains the party’s recognised chairman.
Speaking to The PUNCH, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, dismissed Major’s faction as a “renegade group.”
However, addressing journalists in Abuja on Saturday, Major defended the convention’s legitimacy, citing a recent court ruling.
“The judgment of the Abia High Court dated 1st November 2024 compelled INEC to hand our party to its Board of Trustees, led by Dr Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam, pending the resolution of all issues in court,” he said.
He added that the ruling allowed the Board of Trustees to activate all party organs, leading to the congresses that culminated in the national convention.
The convention, initially scheduled for 22nd January 2025 but delayed by a court order, was concluded on 4th February after the order expired.
According to Major, the convention ratified the expulsion of Kwankwaso and his supporters, reviewed party finances, and rejected a proposed new logo in favour of the original.
