- Former President Obasanjo revealed he once dismissed his daughter from his farm for lateness to teach a lesson about discipline and setting examples
- Obasanjo advised a new board chairman to make firm decisions, even if unpopular, and to be just, fair, and humane in his leadership
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed that he once dismissed his daughter from his farm due to her lateness, emphasizing that it served as a strong lesson for his employees.
Obasanjo shared this experience while hosting Dayo Israel, the newly appointed board chairman of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, at his residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library complex.
He advised Israel to brace for challenges and be prepared to make firm decisions, even if it means stepping on toes, in order to succeed in his role. The former president stressed that no leader can achieve success without making tough choices.
Recounting the incident, Obasanjo explained that his daughter had joined his farm for practical experience after he left office as Head of State. On her first day, she arrived at 7:15 a.m. instead of the required 7:00 a.m.
He warned her about the importance of setting a good example for other workers.
However, when she arrived late again the next day, he did not hesitate to send her back at the gate. This action, he noted, had a profound impact on his employees, who realized that if he could enforce discipline on his own daughter, no one was exempt.
Obasanjo also urged Israel to be just, fair, and humane, even when making difficult decisions.
Earlier, Israel praised Obasanjo as an international figure filled with wisdom and experience. He stated, “Meeting Baba Obasanjo is always inspiring. His insights are invaluable as we embark on this journey of transformation at FMC Abeokuta.”
