- Nigerians express frustration
Nigeria’s largest telecom operator, MTN, has commenced the gradual implementation of a 50 per cent tariff increase approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in January.
WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that NCC approved the tariff hike on January 20, citing rising operational costs and the need to ensure the long-term sustainability of the telecommunications sector.
Meanwhile, under the new pricing structure newly introduced by MTN, subscribers now have to pay significantly more for internet access.
The price adjustments primarily affect several data plans.
For instance, the 1.5GB monthly plan, previously priced at N1,000, has been replaced by a 1.8GB plan now costing N1,500.
The 15GB plan has increased from N4,500 to N6,500, while the 20GB plan now costs N7,500, up from N5,500.
The 1.5 terabyte 90-day plan has risen from N150,000 to N240,000, and the 600GB 90-day plan is now priced at N120,000, up from N75,000, according to the updated list.
Irked by the development, Nigerians have expressed outrage and frustration.
An X user, simply identified as @Khanstillday, wrote, ”I think it’s high time we boycotted MTN. Their network is terrible, and their data plans are a rip-off. the 15GB package doesn’t even last three days.
Another Nigerian user on X, @Atandalukman_ wrote, ”300% increase is a lot fr. I will take it as a glitch for now sha cos wtf?”
@neefenawti shared a dissent opinion. To him, the network providers including MTN Nigeria could not be blamed for the development, stating President Bola Tinubu had earlier disclosed he was not interested in price control.
He wrote, ”I won’t even blame MTN. In a country where the president said he does not believe in price control, what do you expect will happen?? The government is out there to watch people plunge further into poverty. They want to reduce the public’s purchasing power so you will not have the means to fight back against a government that puts people in sufferness. We just dey start.”
