  • MURIC cautioned the FG against intimidating El-Rufai, stating it could tarnish Tinubu’s reputation, given El-Rufai’s role in the 2023 victory
  • MURIC warned that suppressing El-Rufai would portray the administration as intolerant of dissent and urged allowing him to move freely

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has cautioned the federal government against intimidating former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

In a statement on Wednesday, MURIC’s Founder and Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, warned that any attempt to suppress El-Rufai could tarnish President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reputation as a democratic leader.

El-Rufai recently alleged plans to arrest him due to his criticisms of the APC-led government and his perceived alliance with opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections.

MURIC urged the government to avoid political persecution, citing El-Rufai’s key role in securing Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 general elections.

“Considering the immense contribution of former Governor El-Rufai to the ruling party’s success, as well as his role in President Tinubu’s emergence, we advise the federal government against any form of intimidation if these reports are true,” the statement read.

The group warned that such actions would portray the administration as intolerant of dissent.

“In today’s globalized world, allowing El-Rufai to move freely will earn the government greater respect internationally,” MURIC added.
