  • The initiative follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive for a nationwide review of existing dams

The Jigawa State Government has announced plans to build 10 small dams to support dry-season farming and enhance livelihoods across the state.

Special Adviser on Flood Control and Climate Change, Hamza Hadejia, disclosed this during a radio interactive session in Dutse on Friday.

The initiative follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive for a nationwide review of existing dams to assess their condition and potential upgrades.

Hadejia explained that the project aims to mitigate flooding, prevent river overflows into farmlands, and provide a reliable water source for irrigation. Research is already underway to identify the most suitable locations for the dams to maximise their impact.

“This move is expected to have a significant impact on the state’s agricultural sector, particularly during the dry season,” he said, adding that it aligns with the government’s broader efforts to improve economic conditions for farmers.

The project is anticipated to strengthen Jigawa’s agricultural resilience and contribute to food security in the region.
