- Taiwan’s Head of Mission in Nigeria, Andy Yih-Ping Liu, said this on Sunday
Taiwan has called for improved diplomatic and economic relations with Nigeria, emphasising mutual benefits in socio-economic development.
Speaking in Abuja on Sunday, Taiwan’s Head of Mission in Nigeria, Andy Yih-Ping Liu, urged President Bola Tinubu to facilitate the relocation of Taiwan’s Mission from Lagos to the capital, Abuja.
Liu highlighted Taiwan’s technical expertise in developing natural resources and its potential to support Nigeria’s agriculture, minerals, and energy sectors. He cited Taiwan’s longstanding partnership with Australia as an example of successful collaboration.
“Taiwan would help Nigeria in developing its agriculture, natural minerals, and energy industries,” Liu said, stressing that Taiwan operates transparently and does not engage in backdoor deals or illegal mining.
He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s sovereignty, stating that as Africa’s largest democracy, Nigeria should not be dictated to by non-democratic nations.
“We urge President Bola Tinubu to return Taiwan’s Mission Office to Abuja where it had been since all foreign missions and embassies were moved from Lagos to Abuja in the year 2000,” he said, recalling how former President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered the mission’s relocation to Lagos in 2017.
The call for relocation aligns with Taiwan’s broader push for stronger diplomatic ties with Nigeria, despite the country’s official recognition of the One China policy.
