- Dr. Orabueze emphasized that the USB meets the criteria for statehood as outlined in the 1933 Montevideo Convention
The United States of Biafra (USB), led by Simon Ekpa, has formally reached out to President Bola Tinubu, requesting official recognition of its sovereignty.
In a letter shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Dr. Ngozi Orabueze, the USB’s Acting Head of State and Deputy Prime Minister, the group detailed its reestablishment efforts.
The letter highlights that on November 29, 2024, during a convention in Lahti, Finland, Biafrans worldwide convened to restore the independence declared on May 30, 1967, adopting the new name “The United States of Biafra.” This event followed a referendum process from February 1 to November 28, 2024, engaging over 50 million participants through electronic and physical voting methods.
Dr. Orabueze emphasized that the USB meets the criteria for statehood as outlined in the 1933 Montevideo Convention, including a defined population, government, territorial control, and the capacity to engage in foreign relations. The letter expressed the USB’s commitment to establishing diplomatic ties globally, fostering transparent governance, and promoting economic growth.
The USB seeks Nigeria’s acknowledgment of its sovereignty and proposes constructive dialogue to achieve a peaceful and mutually respectful separation. The letter also notes that countries such as Gabon, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, and Zambia have recognized the USB’s sovereignty.
