A deadly gunpowder explosion in Zamfara State has left at least five people dead and injured many others.

The explosion happened on Tuesday at a market in Talata Mafara, the headquarters of the local government area.

According to reports, the incident happened at the peak of trading activities around 3:45 p.m while traders and shoppers were engaged in their regular transaction at the weekly market.

Over fifty people who were injured in the explosion are currently receiving medical attention at a general hospital.

According to an eyewitness, Muhammad Aliyu, the blast originated near a blacksmith’s shop.

“The explosion happened at the blacksmith’s tent in the market. I was very lucky—I had just left the area when I heard the explosion, and then fire broke out,” he recounted.

“As I speak to you now, we have found five dead bodies, burned beyond recognition, and more than 50 people have sustained varying degrees of injuries. They are currently receiving treatment at the Talata Mafara General Hospital,” DAILY POST quoted him as saying.

Efforts to obtain comments from the Zamfara State Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
