FAAN is working to modernize infrastructure to meet global standards and is already seeing positive results from ongoing rehabilitation projects
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has emphasized the urgent need to upgrade infrastructure at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) due to its ageing facilities.
During his first inspection tour of MMIA, Ganduje, accompanied by FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, acknowledged that many airport facilities and equipment have become obsolete.
He assured stakeholders that the board would work closely with FAAN management to modernize infrastructure to meet global standards.
“There are pressing concerns, but discussions are already underway to address them. Airports in developed countries continuously evolve through visionary management, investment, and modern technology, which is our goal here,” he stated.
Ganduje noted that several previously awarded projects remain incomplete due to inflation and rising costs. He added that much of the airport’s original equipment is now outdated, but FAAN has developed strategies to resolve these challenges.
FAAN’s managing director, Mrs. Kuku, highlighted the ongoing nationwide rehabilitation of airport facilities, noting that these efforts have already shown positive results.
“We have deployed several explosive detection devices to enhance security across Nigeria’s airports. Additionally, terminal rehabilitation projects are progressing, and we expect to complete and commission several of them in the coming months,” she said.
