  • Recall that Edema lost the governorship election to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Ondo has placed an indefinite suspension on Olugbenga Edema, its gubernatorial aspirant, along with Rotimi Adeyemi, his deputy contender.

A correspondence dated March 3 revealed that both individuals, alongside Israel Ayeni, another party affiliate, were sanctioned for purported anti-party actions and constitutional breaches.

Peter Olagookun, who serves as the NNPP chairman in Ondo, jointly signed the suspension document with twelve other members of the state working committee (SWC).

Olagookun explained that their suspension resulted from “suing in the name of the party without recourse to the appropriate stakeholders in both the state and national level according to our party constitution.”

“Suing the party without exhausting internal resolution mechanism as provided by the party’s constitution and involving in anti-party’s activities,” he further remarked.

Edema suffered defeat in the gubernatorial election held on November 16, where he contested against Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Before the election, Edema approached the federal high court in Akure, seeking Aiyedatiwa’s disqualification and urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to annul his nomination.

He asserted that Aiyedatiwa and his running mate emerged through an invalid primary conducted by the APC on April 20, which lacked proper legitimacy.

The former NNPP candidate maintained that the primary process contradicted the Electoral Act, 2022, urging the court to clarify how section 15 of the third schedule of the 1999 Constitution should be applied.
