  • A joint services team, comprising the Nigerian Navy, tactical, and marine units, has been deployed to safeguard Onuebum and Ayakoro as law enforcement intensifies the kidnappers’ manhunt.

Gunmen have allegedly kidnapped Loveday Akari, a senior special assistant to the managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in Ogbia LGA, Bayelsa.

According to intelligence sources, Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication covering the Lake Chad region, reported that the abduction took place on Friday.

The publication quoted sources as stating that the assailants escaped using a boat, which was later found abandoned a short distance from the crime scene.

“In response, security forces activated blocking positions to restrict the hoodlums’ movement while electronic surveillance assets were deployed to locate their hideout,” the source added.

Makama stated that a joint services team, including the Nigerian Navy, tactical, and marine units, has been deployed to carry out the rescue mission.

The publication reported that security personnel are intensifying efforts to track down the abductors in Onuebum and Ayakoro, adding that rescue operations continue to secure Akari’s freedom.

On March 4, armed men abducted Philip Ekeli, a Catholic priest, and Peter Andrew, a seminarian, from St. Peter Catholic Church in Iviukwa, Etsako East LGA, Edo State.

A coordinated search-and-rescue mission involving personnel from the Nigerian Army’s 195 Battalion, police officers, vigilantes, and local hunters is ongoing to recover the victims and locate the kidnappers.
