Football, while celebrated for its passion and athleticism, has witnessed moments where the game turned perilous. Several players have suffered life-threatening injuries during matches, leading to comas or even death. Here, we delve into the stories of Taiwo Awoniyi and six other footballers who faced such harrowing experiences.

1. Taiwo Awoniyi (Nigeria) – 2025

In May 2025, during a Premier League match between Nottingham Forest and Leicester City, Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi collided with the goalpost while attempting to convert a cross. Despite the severity of the impact, he continued playing due to the team’s exhausted substitutions.

Later, he was diagnosed with a ruptured intestine, underwent emergency surgery, and was placed in an induced coma. Fortunately, Awoniyi was brought out of the coma and is currently recovering under medical supervision.

2. Fabrice Muamba (Congo) – 2012

In 2012, Fabrice Muamba, playing for Bolton Wanderers in the English Premier League, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on the pitch. His heart stopped beating for 78 minutes before being revived by medical staff. Muamba was placed in an induced coma and later made a remarkable recovery but retired from professional football.

3) Christian Eriksen (Denmark) – 2020

During UEFA Euro 2020, Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed due to cardiac arrest on the pitch. Immediate CPR and defibrillation saved his life. He was induced into a coma briefly and has since returned to professional football with medical monitoring.

4) Marc-Vivien Foé (Cameroon) – 2003

The late Cameroonian midfielder collapsed during a FIFA Confederations Cup match in 2003 due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Despite efforts to resuscitate him on the pitch, he tragically died. His case raised awareness about cardiac screening in football.

5. Piermario Morosini (Italy) – 2012

The Italian midfielder collapsed during a Serie B match in 2012 from a cardiac arrest. Morosini was treated on the pitch and taken to the hospital but died shortly after. This incident pushed Italian football to improve emergency medical responses.

6. Fabrice Fiorèse (France)

French striker Fabrice Fiorèse suffered a traumatic brain injury after a clash during a match in Ligue 1. He was put into an induced coma for weeks and required extensive rehabilitation before eventually retiring.

7. Claudio Sala

An Italian midfielder in the 1970s, Claudio Sala suffered a severe head injury during a match. The injury caused him to fall into a coma for several days. Despite the gravity of the injury, Sala returned to football after recovery, inspiring reforms in medical care for players.

8) Jean-Pierre Adams (France) – 1982

Former French international Jean-Pierre Adams underwent routine knee surgery in 1982. Due to an error in administering anesthesia, he suffered a bronchospasm, leading to oxygen deprivation and a coma. Adams remained in a coma for 39 years until his death in 2021. His wife, Bernadette, cared for him throughout this period, highlighting a story of unwavering devotion.

9. Serhiy Perkhun (Ukraine) – 2001

Ukrainian goalkeeper Serhiy Perkhun, playing for CSKA Moscow, collided head-on with an opposing player during a match in August 2001. He suffered a severe brain hemorrhage and was placed in a coma. Despite medical efforts, Perkhun passed away nine days later. In his honor, CSKA Moscow retired his jersey number 16.

10. Jerzy Hawrylewicz (Poland) – 1992

Polish forward Jerzy Hawrylewicz collapsed on the field during a match in 1992 due to a heart attack. He entered a persistent vegetative state and remained in a coma for nearly 17 years before passing away in 2009.

11. Amir Angwe (Nigeria) – 1995

In a 1995 African Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final match, Nigerian striker Amir Angwe collapsed on the pitch while playing for Julius Berger FC. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead shortly after, with reports indicating a heart attack as the cause.

12. Nico Rijnders (Netherlands) – 1972

Dutch midfielder Nico Rijnders collapsed during a match for Club Brugge in 1972. He was clinically dead when transported off the pitch but was resuscitated. The incident ended his playing career, and he passed away three years later at the age of 28.

The Urgent Need for Enhanced Medical Protocols in Football

These incidents reveal the urgent necessity for comprehensive medical preparedness during football matches worldwide. Immediate medical intervention, availability of defibrillators, and trained personnel can be the difference between life and death. Football associations across countries have since ramped up safety protocols, but continuous efforts are required to protect players.
