- Tinubu was honoured for advancing South-South cooperation and strengthening ties between Africa and the Caribbean region.
- The Order of Saint Lucia, founded in 1985, is the island’s top honours system for distinguished service recognition.
The government of Saint Lucia has conferred President Bola Tinubu the title of Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia, KCOSL.
The honour is among the highest national decorations granted by the Caribbean island nation.
A statement published on the official X handle of the Office of the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia confirmed the development on Monday.
“The Government of Saint Lucia is pleased to announce that the Governor General has conferred the title of Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia, KCOSL, upon Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the post read.
The announcement noted that the honour was approved by the Governor General based on the recommendation of the Saint Lucian government.
It added that Tinubu was recognised for his “exceptional leadership on the African continent, his commitment to advancing South-South cooperation, and his efforts at rekindling cultural, historical, and diplomatic ties with the Caribbean.”
The president is currently on a state visit to Saint Lucia as part of a wider diplomatic engagement across the Caribbean and South America.
With the recognition, Tinubu becomes one of the few African leaders to receive the KCOSL decoration.
The Saint Lucian authorities noted that the Knight Commander honour is reserved for individuals who have made distinguished contributions to the country or global community.
The conferment comes as part of the ongoing implementation of Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to reposition the country as a diplomatic and cultural force globally.
The Order of Saint Lucia was created in 1985 and remains the nation’s top honours system.
The Knight Commander rank is the second-highest class within the Order, following only the Grand Cross.
