  • The event was moved after hotel’s last-minute cancellation
  • Yar’Adua Centre secured after venue controversy.

Politicians from opposition parties converged on the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on Tuesday for a media conference hosted by the African Democratic Congress.

The event, which drew prominent figures from various political backgrounds, is part of efforts to unveil a new opposition coalition.

The interim national chairman of the ADC, Rauf Aregbesola, a former governor of Osun State, was among the first to arrive at the venue.

Also in attendance were Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president; and Aminu Tambuwal, ex-governor of Sokoto State.

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party; Nasir el-Rufai, ex-governor of Kaduna State; and Dino Melaye, former senator, were present.

Other notable attendees included Solomon Dalung, former minister of youth and sports; Dele Momodu, media entrepreneur; Gabriel Suswam, former senator; and Ireti Kingibe, a serving senator under the Labour Party.

Rotimi Amaechi, former governor of Rivers State; Emeka Ihedioha, a former deputy speaker of the house of representatives; and a former chief of air staff, whose identity remains unconfirmed, also attended the meeting.

Figures from the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party and Social Democratic Party were present at the high-level gathering.

David Mark, former senate president, is expected to lead more members of the emerging coalition into the conference.

Earlier in the day, the event encountered a setback following a sudden cancellation by the initial venue.

The conference was originally scheduled to hold at the Wells Carlton Hotel and Apartments in Asokoro, Abuja.

However, just hours before commencement, the organisers were notified that the venue could no longer host them.

Dele Momodu shared a screenshot of the cancellation notice on Instagram, citing an “internal compliance matter” as the hotel’s reason.

The coalition organisers later secured the Yar’Adua Centre as an alternative venue.
