- Tanko stated that Obi’s one-term offer reflects integrity and readiness to deliver impactful change in just four years.
- Coalition has adopted African Democratic Congress as platform for challenging APC ahead of 2027 general elections.
The national coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr Yunusa Tanko, said that Peter Obi has presented a one-term proposal to the opposition coalition.
Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, had declared his willingness to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.
The former Anambra state governor said any candidate from the South must vacate office by May 28, 2031, in line with the power rotation principle.
Obi has teamed up with former vice-president Atiku Abubakar, former transportation minister Rotimi Amaechi, and ex-Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai to challenge the All Progressives Congress in the next presidential election.
On Tuesday, the coalition formally adopted the African Democratic Congress as its political platform.
Speaking in Gombe during a chieftaincy ceremony, Tanko said Obi’s one-term pledge has already been submitted to the coalition for consideration.
“We have presented it to the coalition. It is there for them to make a decision,” he said.
“But we are confident it can work. This is a pronouncement rooted in integrity, and Peter Obi embodies that.
“What Nigeria needs now are leaders with integrity.”
He explained that although the constitution allows a second term, Obi believes four years is enough to implement meaningful change.
“That shows you how prepared and focused he is,” he said.
“Even stabilising electricity alone will solve a multitude of problems.
He is promising that under his leadership, Nigeria will become an exporting country again. Planes will no longer leave our airports empty.”
