  • Obi insists Nigeria needs unity to dismantle poverty and insecurity structures that have held the nation back for decades.
  • The ADC was unveiled by the coalition on Wednesday as its platform for the 2027 general election.

The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has said the decision to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was not taken lightly.

Members of the opposition coalition on Wednesday formally unveiled the ADC as their platform for the 2027 general election.

The former senate president, David Mark, was named interim national chairman, while the former governor of Osun state, Rauf Aregbesola, was appointed interim national secretary.

In a post on his X handle on Thursday, the former Anambra State governor said the coalition’s aim is to work together in pursuit of capable and compassionate leadership in 2027.

“Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first,” Obi wrote.

He said the choice of ADC followed serious introspection on the nation’s condition and what must be done to move forward.

“This decision was not made lightly. It comes from deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward,” he said.

Obi stressed that changing Nigeria required broad collaboration and not partisan isolation.

“No one group can change Nigeria alone. To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls even when those bridges are uneasy,” he added.

Earlier in the week, Obi declared that he was willing to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.

He said that whoever emerges from the south must respect the zoning principle and vacate office by May 28, 2031.
