Former special assistant on digital communications to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad has disclosed that his former principal is in a stable health condition contrary to media reports.

This clarification was made on Thursday by Ahmad via his verified X handle, as a result of wave of social media reports alleging that Buhari had been rushed abroad in a life-threatening condition.

He confirmed that Buhari is receiving medical care but insisted the situation is not as dire as widely reported.

“It is true that former president Buhari is unwell and is currently receiving medical attention,” he wrote.

“However, contrary to the exaggerated claims circulating in the media, he is stable and responding well to treatment, and we are optimistic about his full recovery.”

Ahmad’s comments come amid growing speculation about Buhari’s health, with several online platforms alleging the 82-year-old was in a United Kingdom (UK) hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU).

The claims have triggered concerns among Buhari’s supporters and political allies, especially given his past health-related absences during when he was in office between 2015 and 2023.

Ahmad thanked Nigerians for their prayers and goodwill messages, saying the support has been overwhelming.

“We appreciate the outpouring of prayers and goodwill from his supporters and well-wishers around the world. We continue to pray for his complete and speedy recovery,” he said.

Buhari has largely maintained a low public profile since leaving office in May 2023, residing between Daura in Katsina state and Kaduna, with occasional trips abroad for medical check-ups.

His health has been a subject of public concern since 2017, when he spent 104 days in London for an undisclosed illness, temporarily handing over power to then vice-president Yemi Osinbajo.

On Tuesday, Garba Shehu, spokesperson to Buhari, said his principal would attend the unveiling of his new book titled ‘According to the President: Lessons From A Presidential Spokesman’s Experience’.

Shehu said the book contains “lessons” he learnt during his “many years” of presidential communications.
