The Independent National Electoral Commission has said the Continuous Voter Registration exercise in Anambra is strictly for the November 8 governorship election.
The resident electoral commissioner in Anambra state, Dr Elizabeth Agwu, made this known on Thursday during a press briefing in Awka.
She said the voter registration exercise would not apply to the Senate and House of Assembly bye-elections.
According to her, the CVR will hold from July 8 to July 17.
She stated that the exercise will run daily from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., including Saturdays, but excluding Mondays.
Agwu called on eligible voters to come out in large numbers to register or update their information.
“Fresh registration must be done physically at designated INEC offices, while data revalidation or corrections can be done online. INEC will not register any person in absentia,” she said.
“Also, registrations outside the approved time will not be accepted, as the registration portal will automatically close at 3:00 p.m. each day.”
She warned the public not to pay for registration, describing it as illegal.
“I appeal to residents to take this opportunity seriously. Register and vote in the upcoming governorship election so you can play your part in choosing who governs you,” she added.
The electoral commissioner said a provisional voter register would be published after the CVR exercise for public scrutiny and necessary corrections.
She noted that training for ad hoc electoral officers would take place on Friday and Saturday.
Speaking on the bye-election scheduled for August 16, she clarified that voters would use their existing permanent voter cards.
She added that a separate nationwide CVR exercise would commence after the bye-election to prepare for the 2027 general elections.
Agwu revealed that 300 bimodal voter accreditation system scanners had already been configured for the governorship election.
She disclosed that INEC had concluded plans with the National Youth Service Corps for the deployment of corps members as ad hoc staff.
She assured the electorate of a transparent and credible election.
According to her, security agencies will partner with the commission to prevent thuggery, vote-buying, and other electoral offences.
“A total of 16 political parties have fielded candidates,” she said.
She noted that INEC had signed agreements with registered transport unions for effective logistics during the election.
“Non-sensitive materials have arrived in the state, while sensitive materials are expected soon,” she added.
She also said that public facilities had been requested from the state government to allow fair campaign access.
Agwu called on political parties to maintain peace and encourage high voter turnout.
She assured residents of adequate security before, during, and after the election.
