The Nigerian Army says it is intensifying its nationwide operations with fresh breakthroughs recorded in the north-east theatre.
According to NAN, recent strategic operations by the army have delivered major breakthroughs against terrorists in the North-East.
A source at the army headquarters said troops recently uncovered 54 improvised explosive devices, IEDs, planted in gas cylinders under the Dikwa–Marte Bridge in Borno State.
He said the IEDs were rigged in series by ISWAP/JAS insurgents to destroy the bridge and hamper military operations in the area.
Troops of 24 Task Force Brigade and 50 Task Force Battalion under Operation Hadin Kai carried out the operation on July 4.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts safely neutralised all the devices.
He said IED attacks remain a major challenge in the military’s counter-insurgency campaign.
The source revealed that troops of 7 Division Garrison, supported by local hunters and Hybrid Forces, also ambushed terrorists in Platari and Komala communities, Konduga Local Government Area.
He said three terrorists were eliminated during the well-coordinated mission.
According to him, troops recovered motorcycles, agrochemicals and food items from the suspects.
“Concurrently, 222 Battalion troops repelled an attempted infiltration of the Mandarari IDP Camp, neutralising several insurgents in the process,” he said.
“In another proactive engagement, the Acting Commander of Sector 2, Operation Hadin Kai, Brig Gen B.M.G. Martins, led a surgical raid on terrorist hideouts in Mandaragiri, Nguma, Kimba and Sabon Gari.
“This resulted in the elimination of two terrorist scouts and seizure of a cache of weapons.”
He said continued pressure from the army led to the surrender of 14 family members of ISWAP/JAS insurgents, including eight women and six children.
“Additionally, a teenage terrorist of Buduma descent surrendered, along with a horse, to troops of 19 Brigade in Baga on July 5,” he added.
