  • Jonathan described the former leader’s death as both a national tragedy and a personal loss of a respected elder.
  • He sent condolences to Buhari’s family, Katsina people and Nigerians still mourning the late president’s passing.

Former president Goodluck Jonathan has described the death of Muhammadu Buhari as a national tragedy and a personal loss.

Buhari, a former military ruler who later became a two-term civilian president, died at the age of 82.

In a condolence message posted on X, Jonathan said the late president served Nigeria with discipline, courage and an unwavering spirit.

“President Buhari was a notable leader, patriot, and elder statesman who served our beloved nation as both a military Head of State and President to the best of his abilities,” he wrote.

“He will be remembered as a courageous leader, a disciplined officer, and a committed public servant who made considerable contributions towards the peace and progress of our dear nation.

“The late President was deeply admired across the strata of society for his decency, integrity, and exemplary life of service.”

Jonathan added that Buhari served the country with a strong sense of character and patriotism.

“As a leader, he was selfless in his commitment to duty and served the country with character and a deep sense of patriotism,” he added.

He described Buhari’s passing as a painful loss not just for the country but also for him personally.

Jonathan stressed that Buhari’s legacy would continue to resonate with Nigerians who believe in sacrifice and national service.

He said, “His legacy will continue to endure in the hearts of all who value sacrifice, integrity, perseverance, and devotion to national ethos.”

He also extended condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians mourning the loss.

Recall that in 2015, Buhari made history by becoming the first opposition candidate to defeat a sitting president in Nigeria, unseating Jonathan at the polls.
