- It noted that if reports of Obi’s possible exit are true, it would be a wrong move and could destroy his political career
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has admonished Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, not to quit the party if things don’t go his way.
The admonition was issued by the ADC Youth Vanguard in a statement on Tuesday.
In the statement signed by Comrade Abayomi Bello of the youth vanguard, the group warned Obi that leaving the ADC if he does not get the party’s presidential ticket is tantamount to a political suicide.
It noted that if reports of Obi’s possible exit are true, it would be a wrong move and could destroy his political career.
The group said Obi is known for his selflessness and putting the nation’s first, adding that he would be going against everything he stands for if leaves coalition for personal ambition.
“We doubt that Mr. Tanko actually has Peter Obi’s mandate to say what he said,” the group stated.
“We believe that Mr. Obi has built a strong image as a leader who stands for principle, youth empowerment, and putting the country first.”
The group also reminded Nigerians that Peter Obi has moved between political parties several times in the past. According to them, from APGA to PDP to Labour Party and leaving ADC now could make people to start seeing him as just another politician looking out for himself.
They said coalitions need patience, teamwork, and sacrifice.
“If Mr. Obi leaves the ADC coalition too soon, he may lose the trust of his supporters, weaken alliances, and disappoint young Nigerians who already feel frustrated by divided opposition,” the statement added.
Instead of leaving, the group advised Obi to stay and lead from within.
“He should mentor young leaders, help shape the party’s direction, and build something that will last. That’s how true political legacies are created. Anything else could lead to political isolation,” the group warned
