INEC extends Anambra voter registration by three days

• INEC says over 12,000 voters in Anambra applied for transfer of registration within and outside the state.
• About 7,000 applicants requested updates or replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voters Cards, according to INEC.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the Continuous Voter Registration in Anambra State by three days.

The exercise, which was initially billed to end on Thursday, July 17, will now conclude on Sunday, July 20, 2025.

INEC said the extension followed appeals from citizens in the state.

The commission also commended the peaceful conduct of the exercise across the 326 registration centres in the state.

The national commissioner and chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, made this known in Abuja on Thursday.

He said no fewer than 96,085 new voters were registered within nine days of the CVR exercise.

“On average, the commission registered over 10,600 voters per day,” Olumekun said.

“In addition, 12,595 voters applied for transfer of their registration, both within and outside the state.”

“Also, 7,061 persons applied for the update of their records or the replacement of their damaged or lost Permanent Voters Cards.”

He said the commission would proceed to display the register for claims and objections by citizens as required by law.

This, he noted, would be followed by a further clean-up of the data using the Automated Biometric Identification System.

Olumekun said the commission would publish a breakdown of new registrants by age, gender, occupation and disability.

He noted that, so far, 56,017 of the new registrants, representing 58 per cent, are female.

He added that 50,429 of them, representing 52.48 per cent, are young people between 18 and 34 years old.

The INEC official also disclosed that five more groups had submitted letters of intent to register as political parties.

He said this brought the total number of such applications to 134.

The new applicants, according to him, are the Green Future Party, Affirmative Action Party of Nigeria, A Better Alliance for Nigeria, New National Democratic Party and Advanced Progressive People’s Alliance.
