  • ADC said the crowd’s reception of Obi reflects what citizens expect from public servants and shouldn’t trigger panic in leaders.
  • Abdullahi described Okpebholo’s threat as rooted in fear and insecurity, not based on democratic leadership principles.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has faulted the governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, over his reported threat to former presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Recall that Governor Okpebholo warned Obi to stay away from Edo unless he obtained clearance — a comment that has drawn backlash online.

Reacting via post on X, the national publicity secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the governor’s statement as “disgraceful, undemocratic”, and a violation of Obi’s right as a Nigerian citizen.

Abdullahi said Obi needed no permission to visit any part of the country.

“Edo State is a Nigerian state. Obi is a free citizen and does not need the governor’s clearance to visit Nigerians in their own country,” Abdullahi said.

He condemned the governor’s reaction to Obi’s recent visit and donations in the state, describing it as a sign of insecurity and weak leadership.

“When a governor panics over courtesy visits and modest donations, it is a clear sign that something is deeply wrong somewhere,” he added.

He stated that public admiration for Obi should not worry any governor who has genuinely served his people.

Abdullahi said the crowd that welcomed Obi could be a reminder of the type of leadership citizens truly desire.
