- Ajaero says clampdown on unions is a deliberate attempt to silence workers ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
- The NLC president warns that Nigeria is tilting dangerously towards tyranny amid increasing attacks on civic freedoms.
The president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has accused the federal government and state governors of seizing workers’ contributions unlawfully.
He made the remarks on Monday at the opening of the 21st Rain School of the NLC in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Ajaero described the action as “stealing workers’ sweat” and alleged that the government was undermining democratic structures and stifling dissent.
The labour leader said Nigeria was now on the verge of tyranny, with leaders shutting down civic engagement and labour rights.
According to him, Nigerian workers are facing increasing assaults on their rights to free speech, peaceful assembly, and participation in governance.
He alleged that the current wave of clampdowns on union and civic activities was a deliberate move to weaken opposition before the 2027 general election.
“Governance has been abandoned for 2027 politicking,” he said.
“Leaders who should be working to alleviate suffering are instead consumed by power games, leaving workers and ordinary Nigerians to bear the brunt of economic hardship and mounting insecurity, all imposed by their policies.”
