- Durojaye urged residents in vulnerable areas to temporarily relocate if necessary, as predicted heavy rains could trigger flash floods.
- OGSEMA emphasised that proper waste disposal and regular drainage clearing are key to reducing the impact of flooding.
The Ogun State Emergency Management Agency (OGSEMA) has embarked on a sensitisation campaign to markets and residential areas to prevent flooding.
The exercise followed a warning by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NMA) predicting that floods would affect several states, including Ogun.
Kuto, Amolasho, Gbangba and other locations in the Abeokuta South Local Government Area were among the places visited.
The acting director of OGSEMA, Soji Durojaye, urged residents to adopt proactive measures against flooding as the rainy season intensifies.
Durojaye said flood-prone communities must remain on high alert, stressing that the government alone could not tackle the challenge.
He cautioned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages, illegal structures on waterways and called for the clearing of blocked drains.
“I am appealing to community leaders and residents to help spread the message of environmental responsibility,” he said.
“NIMET had predicted heavy rainfall for the year, which could lead to flash floods in some areas.
“So, residents, especially those living in flood-prone areas, are to be vigilant and to consider relocating temporarily if the need arises.
“If every household ensures proper waste disposal and clears their surroundings, the impact of flooding will be greatly reduced,” Durojaye added.
Samuel Adegboyega, a resident of Amolasho, and Adetutu Mustapha, a trader in Kuto, thanked the government for the campaign and pledged to comply with the warnings.
