- ADC says Tinubu must justify continuation in office with performance, not declarations from party leaders ahead of 2027 elections.
- Abdullahi accuses APC of mocking struggling citizens while praising itself despite soaring food prices and failing national currency.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Wednesday criticised the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Yilwatda, over his claim that there would be no vacancy in the presidency come 2027.
Yilwatda, while addressing party members in Abuja on Tuesday, declared that the seat of power in Aso Rock was already secured.
In its reaction, the ADC described the statement as haughty and insensitive to the economic and social struggles faced by citizens.
ADC’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, argued that the presidency was not an inherited throne but a public trust that must be renewed through electoral accountability.
He warned that such comments could be interpreted as an attempt by the APC to undermine the will of the electorate.
“The APC chairman’s assertion that there will be ‘no vacancy in Aso Rock’ insults Nigerians dealing with hunger, unemployment and insecurity,” Abdullahi said.
He maintained that elections must remain competitive and that every incumbent must justify their continuation in office through performance and voter approval.
The party insisted that regardless of APC’s position, Nigerians would decide in 2027 whether or not to retain President Bola Tinubu.
According to Abdullahi, the government’s poor record in security, poverty reduction and the economy means Tinubu will face a difficult task convincing citizens.
He added that “two years before the election, to declare no vacancy is to mock democracy and the suffering of families and businesses.”
The ADC stressed that the ruling party would be judged by key indicators, including jobs for young people, electricity supply and justice delivery.
