- Abubakar said his goal was building a safer and prosperous Nigeria, stressing his ambition was not rooted in desperation.
- The professor representing him maintained that the ADC was not just a political party but a movement for national renewal.
Former vice-president Atiku Abubakar has declared that he is not desperate to become Nigeria’s president in 2027.
He explained that his political ambition is centred on securing a safer and more prosperous nation, rather than personal interest.
Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, made this known through a representative in Lagos.
He was represented by Ola Olateju, a professor at Achievers University, during a ceremony welcoming defectors into the African Democratic Congress.
The event was attended by some members of the PDP and Labour Party who were formally joining the ADC.
“Atiku Abubakar’s plan is to build a better Nigeria. It’s not about him being president,” Olateju said.
“It’s about having a government that can deliver for Nigerians. It’s not a personal thing for him,” he added.
He stressed that Abubakar was not desperate, saying: “It’s not about Atiku having to be president at all costs.”
The professor described the ADC as more than a political party, insisting it represents a “movement of Nigerians for a better Nigeria.”
On the 2027 presidential election, Olateju said the ADC flag bearer would emerge through a transparent internal process.
“We are not imposing anyone on the people. Whoever emerges through free and fair contests, we will all support,” he said.
“The point is a better Nigeria, not Atiku for president at all costs. Everybody has a right to contest,” he added.
He assured that the party would unite behind its eventual candidate, saying the nominee would embody the collective aspirations of Nigerians.
