  • The former lawmaker faulted FERMA for neglecting Ondo roads, questioning whether the agency is functioning effectively or in total collapse.
  • He also recalled FERMA’s previous intervention on Ondo-Ile-Oluji-Ipetu Ijesha road, which has now again fallen into disrepair.

A former senator of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nicholas Tofowomo, has described federal roads in Ondo state as “death traps.”

Tofowomo, who recently joined from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) said this while addressing journalists on Friday in Okitipupa.

He lamented that the condition of roads in Ondo south had become unbearable, making them almost impassable for motorists.

According to him, the worst-affected roads include Ondo-Ile-Oluji-Ipetu Ijesha, Ore-Okitipupa, Okitipupa-Erekiti-Akinfosile, and Irele-Ore routes.

The ex-lawmaker, who represented Ondo south in the ninth national assembly, recalled moving a motion with Francis Fadahunsi on the Ondo-Ile-Oluji-Ipetu Ijesha road before it was fixed by the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA).

He, however, said the road had again deteriorated, forcing travellers to take longer alternative routes.

“People travelling from Ile-Oluji to Ilesha or Ikeji will have to go through Ondo or Akure, two times farther than going through Ile-Oluji directly,” he said.

The former senator faulted FERMA for failing to maintain critical roads nationwide, questioning whether the agency was still functional.

He said, “I urge the national assembly committee on FERMA to stand up to their responsibilities by doing the needful for FERMA to rise to its responsibilities in order to save lives on these federal roads.”

Tofowomo urged the federal government to prioritise road maintenance, stressing that it would reduce accidents, boost trade, and ease the movement of goods and services.
