  • Senegal midfielder Pape Matar Sarr suffers an early exit due to injury in Tottenham’s New Year’s Eve game against Bournemouth
  • Sarr’s potential absence raises concerns about his participation in the African Cup of Nations, impacting both Tottenham and Senegal

In a New Year’s Eve showdown at Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League home, Senegal midfielder Pape Matar Sarr encountered a setback, being forced off the pitch a mere 30 minutes into the game against Bournemouth. Despite opening the scoring, Sarr’s unfortunate early departure raises concerns about his participation in the upcoming African Cup of Nations next month.

Sarr’s potential absence adds to Tottenham’s challenges, even though they recently welcomed Rodrigo Bentancur back into the squad sooner than anticipated. The 21-year-old midfielder, who scored his second goal of the season, displayed skillful dribbling to create opportunities for Spurs. However, his impactful performance was cut short as he was replaced by Oliver Skipp, leaving the field in tears.

Tottenham captain Son Heung-Min and midfield teammate Bentancur offered consolation to Sarr as he exited the pitch. With just over two weeks remaining before Aliou Cisse’s side kicks off their AFCON defense against the Gambia, the uncertainty surrounding Sarr’s availability adds a layer of complexity to Senegal’s preparations for the tournament.
