Nigerian doctors flood Lagos recruitment centre for work in Saudi Arabia

Nigerian doctors on Saturday flooded a hotel in GRA, Ikeja, Lagos State to attend an interview conducted by officials of Saudi Arabia health ministry.

Successful candidates would be given work permits and would be allowed to practice their profession in the golf country. Every year, officials reportedly from the UK, US and a few others organise recruitment exercises for doctors in Nigeria to work abroad.

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), umbrella body for medical doctors in the country, has severally lamented what it calls brain-drain, a term for shortage of doctors due to large numbers leaving the country in search of greener pastures abroad.

One doctor at a private clinic in Abuja told BBC in 2005, “I truly want to be a specialist, but if I stay here I will never reach my potential. Never!”
