An unidentified woman has delivered and abandoned her newborn baby in a primary health care centre in Osumenyi, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

It was gathered that the incident, which happened on Monday, has set tongues wagging in the community.

According to a source, the woman rushed to the health centre almost at the point of delivery and was delivered of the baby within 15 minutes by some nurses who were on duty.

However, when the nurses left to attend to other patients in a different ward, the newly delivered mother sneaked out of the ward and allegedly escaped, leaving behind the newborn baby.

The source said, “There was a report by the officials of Primary health care center in Obiuno village in Osumenyi that on Monday 10/06/2019 at about 11:20 am, a yet to be identified Pregnant woman who was at the Point of delivery rushed to the health care center.

She was quickly attended to and fifteen minutes later she successfully delivered a baby girl while the nurses left to attend to other patients.

“Shortly after the delivery, the woman abandoned the baby and disappeared to unknown destination leaving behind the child at the mercy of the nurses at the health care center.”

The Police Public Relations Officer of Anambra State Police Command, SP Haruna Mohammed, while confirming this, said the matter was reported to a police station in the community, and police operatives attached to Juvenile and welfare unit, Osumenyi division visited the scene.

He said, “investigations have commenced, and efforts are being intensified to trace the fleeing mother in order to bring her to Justice.

“Consequently, arrangements have been concluded to hand over the baby to Government orphanage for custodial care.”
