The Ebonyi State Police Command on Friday arraigned two persons, Mr Ezza Ikechukwu, 29, and Miss Eguji Mercy, 19, for allegedly setting ablaze a police station in the state.

The suspects, who were remanded at a custodial centre on Friday, were also alleged to have snatched an AK-47 rifle from one of the policemen on duty.

The suspects allegedly committed the offence at Achiagu community, in the Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State on October 28, 2020.

The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Chinedu Mbam, told the court that the offence was punishable under sections 516A (a), 517, 402(2b), 320 (a) and 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.

They were arraigned before an Ebonyi State Magistrate’s Court sitting in Abakaliki, the state capital, on six counts bordering on armed robbery, attempted murder, malicious damage, illegal possession of weapons and felony.

The defense counsel, Nwebo E., urged the court to grant his clients bail, saying the second defendant was a female and could not have committed the crime at her age.

But the prosecution opposed the application, saying the second defendant was not a minor.

The Chief Magistrate, B.I. Chukwu, directed that the defendants be remanded at the Abakaliki Custodial Centre, while their case file should be forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal action.

She adjourned the matter till November 16, 2020, for report of compliance.
