TRIBUTE: Dahiru Usman, Gombe-born Scholar Who Memorized Quran Before The Age of 20

Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi has died. Another large star has fallen from the sky. This time, it dropped in Gombe State, known as the Jewel of the Savannah. Tragedy occurred in Gombe, but West Africa mourns the death of Dahiru, a religious leader who lived for Islam.


He was a man of authority and respect. He led Tijanniyah, one of Africa’s largest Muslim communities. Those who disagree with his Sufi attitude recognize his strategic prowess and power of persuasion.

Dahiru’s admirers said that although he was a man, he was more than one person. He was a well-known Islamic scholar who made significant contributions to the expansion and advancement of Islam in West Africa. After leading a happy life of service, he lost the fight against the grim reaper at the age of 98.

The expansion of Islamic education through scholarship and high-quality participation was his biggest accomplishment. His growth narrative is motivational. His journey from a young man in Nafada, a Gombe town, who was passionate about Islam to the leader of the Tijanniyah Sufi order in Nigeria and West Africa reveals more about him as a kind and helpful man.

The Gombe-born Islamic scholar who memorized the entire Holy Quran at the age of 20 has said his farewell. Bauchi, the son of a distinguished Quran reciter who devoted his life to Islamic education and research, has died. He left a legacy of service and effective leadership.

There is no cure or treatment for death. When it’s time to leave, one can’t miss it. However, there is a cure for death. The solution is legacy. If you spend your life with a purpose, you will not die and be forgotten. Sheikh Dahiru led a life of service to Islam. He would be greatly missed by the Muslim community, especially the Tijanniyah Sufi group.

He is one of the leading Nigeria’s Islamic scholar

His father, a Fulani man identified as Gwani Alhaji Usman Adam was a respected Quran reciter and scholar

He memorized the entire Qur’an by age 20

He studied under prominent scholars, including Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse of Senegal, who significantly influenced his spiritual path

He led the Tijaniyyah Sufi order in Nigeria and West Africa

He served as Deputy Chairman of the Fatwa Committee of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs

He taught Quranic exegesis (Tafsir) for over 76 years, with broadcasts on Bauchi Radio and Radio Nigeria Kaduna reaching millions

He founded hundreds of Qur’anic schools, producing thousands of Hafiz (Qur’an memorizers)

He promoted promoted peace, tolerance, and interfaith dialogue

He had over 100 children, many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, many of whom are also Hafiz

He received the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) award

He passed away on November 27, 2025, at 98, leaving behind a profound impact on Islamic scholarship and community
