It was a heartbreaking Saturday when Ifunanya Nwangene, an Abuja-based singer, died from a snake bite.

Nwangene, a soprano vocalist with the Amemuso Choir, died at the Federal Medical Centre in Abuja after efforts to save her life reportedly failed due to a lack of adequate venom.

On Sunday afternoon, the Amemuso Choir released a message on their Facebook page, confirming her tragic death.

The statement, signed by the choir’s music director, Sam Ezugwu, announced the circumstances of her passing.

“We regret to announce the sudden demise of our beloved soprano, Ifunanya Nwangene, who passed away yesterday, 31st January 2026, at the Federal Medical Centre due to a snake bite,” the statement read.

The choir described her as a fast-rising talent within Abuja’s music community, noting that her death came at a critical stage of her artistic journey.

“A rising star, Ifunanya was on the cusp of sharing her incredible talent with the world.“

Her voice and spirit will be deeply missed,” the statement added, while indicating that burial arrangements would be communicated later.

The death of Ifunanya Nwangene has sparked outrage in the country, with several Nigerians lamenting the lack of anti-venom vaccines in our hospitals, including tertiary health institutions.

According to the Toxicological Society of Nigeria, the country records approximately 1,900 snake bite-related deaths per year, with Gombe State reporting 54 deaths in 2025.

However, numerous health professionals, including doctors, have recommended Nigerians to prioritize preventive measures. They also encouraged Nigerians to decrease the number of snakes near their homes.

How to prevent snake bites or keep snakes out of your home

Don’t stroll through bushy or grassy regions

If necessary, wear long boots and loose trousers

Snakes like to hang out in tall grasses or thick bushes, so always chop them down

Avoid thrusting your hands recklessly into holes, beneath rocks, or inside shrubs

If required, wear gloves and do a thorough inspection

Always use a torch to light your path while walking at night or entering a dark room or place

When working in dark rooms, always use safety gear like gloves, long pants, or long boots

Always get away from snakes and avoid touching or upsetting them

Always keep your surroundings or compounds free of debris, rocks, and woodpiles where snakes could hide

Grow some plants like lemongrass or marigold that are natural snake-repellant plants

How to manage snake bites

Stay calm after a snake bite because stress can increase heart rate and distribute the venom faster

Remove tight clothing, watches, or jewelry near the biting area

To limit the transmission of venom, keep the afflicted limb below the heart level

Get medical care immediately, where antivenom will be delivered shortly

Take note of the snake’s look as it assists with therapy

Avoid sucking out venom and applying tourniquets

Avoid using cold or heat, and don’t cut, slash, or use electric shock

Keep track of your vital signs, which include your breathing, pulse, and blood pressure
