Here are six major historic sites and natural wonders in the state;

Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove

The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s a mystical woodland on the outskirts of Osogbo. It is revered as the home of the River Osun goddess of fertility, healing, and spiritual purification.

The grove’s terrain and meandering river are lined with sanctuaries and temples, as well as sculptures and art works dedicated to Osun and other deities. It is also home to millions of Osun devotees who visit the sacred forest to honour the River Goddess, Osun.

Erin-Ijesa Water Falls

Erin-Ijesha Waterfalls are also known as Olumirin Falls. It is a multi-level cascade, with around 150 steps up to the main falls. It is situated in Erin-Ijesha, an old town within Oriade Local Government. It is a popular tourist destination and natural wonder, attracting thousands of visitors each year.

It is surrounded by rich greenery, which makes it ideal for hikers and environment lovers. It provides stunning views and a relaxing atmosphere. Although locals consider it a sacred spot where rites and rituals are done in a spiritual ceremony known as the “Olumirin festival,” visitors continue to trek and swim there.

Oyi Ayikunnugba Oke-Ila Waterfalls

It is located in Oke-Ila, Ifedayo Local Government Area. It is a wonderful location for nature enthusiasts and adventurers. It’s a natural wonder, with cascading waterfalls and breathtaking views. It is ideal for hiking, swimming, and interacting with nature.

Findings revealed that Oke-Ila locals think the falls have mystical significance and that cleansing can take place there. Tourists can, however, relax in the natural pool, explore neighboring caverns, or simply enjoy the peace and quiet.

Ibodi Monkey Reserve

Ibodi Monkey Reserve is located in Ibodi, an old town inside the Atakunmosa East Local Government. It is a refuge and home to a healthy population of Mona monkeys, providing chances for observation and research. A fantastic destination for wildlife enthusiasts and academics.

The reserve’s setting supports a rich flora and fauna, making it an ideal location for nature walks and bird viewing. It also offers educational programs and eco-tourism activities to encourage wildlife conservation and community engagement. Visitors can explore the forest, learn about local ecosystems, and contribute to conservation efforts.

Owalla lake

Owalla lake is a notable water body in Osun State. It is a man-made lake, in Oba-Oke, created as a reservoir to supply water, supporting local communities and agriculture. The lake supports fishing activities and is an important part of the local ecosystem. The lake’s management involves balancing water supply, irrigation, and ecosystem preservation.

Oduduwa Shrine and Grove

It’s a sacred location in Ile-Ife, Osun State. It is dedicated to the Oduduwa, who is regarded the Yoruba people’s progenitor. The grove has ancient trees, shrines, and cultural objects. It is an important cultural and spiritual location that houses sacred trees, Ifa divination stones, and relics. It hosts traditional rites, cultural activities, and spiritual reflection.

It symbolizes Yoruba history and identity. Visitors can explore the sacred places, learn about traditional traditions, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. It holds a variety of festivities, notably the yearly Olojo Festival, which commemorates the creation story and Oduduwa’s legacy. These events offer visitors the opportunity to experience traditional music, dancing, and rituals.
